Old man McCarthy (Peter Madden), a ruthless farmowner who came to riches in
the Australian colonies, is murdered in rural Boscombe Valley, & for police
inspector Lanner (Michael Godfrey) every clue seems to point to his son James
(Nick Tate), who had a fight with his dad just prior to the murder, in which
also farmhand Moran (Jack Woolgar) was involved.
Only Sherlock Holmes (Peter Cushing) thinks differently, & after hearing
all the witnesses, he makes up his own version of the proceedings, differing
largely from that which led to James' arrest. He fnds out that McCarthy didn't
even own his farm but had only rented it from his neighbour Turner (John Tate),
who has been in the Australian colonies the same time he has, & whose
daughter Alice (Heather Kyd) is romantically involved with James.
& despite the fact that Turner is terminally ill & thus very weak,
& Moran would make a fine suspect, too, Holmes soon ties the whole case to
a highwayman who roamed Australia 12 years ago, & who turns out to be
Turner, who had been blackmailed by McCarthy for every penny he had because of
that.
When McCarthy wanted to frce his son James to abductTurner's daughter
Alice to marry her without the consent of her father though, Turner lost his
cool & killed him.
After Turner confesses everything, he dies in the arms of Sherlock Holmes
& Doctor Watson (Nigel Stock).
Despite the rather imaginative inclusion of some animation based on old
prints to visualize Turner's past in Australia, this episode again suffers from
a rather hurried production schedule that give it a stagey look. But again,
Cushing's Sherlock Holmes is impeccable.
