From an informant (Ricardo Islas), three ICE officers (Jose Santiago,
Christina De Leon, Monica J. Ochoa) receive a tip on an seemingly
abandoned warehouse, but are warned that weird things go on in the place.
However, our "heroes" are informed that there are only women in the house,
so they figure is an easy raid, and once inside they're not especially
concerned when they encounter a few masked children. They should have paid
more attention to the story of a judge (Kristi V. Acosta) though, who has
been murdered by women wearing exactly the same masks. But the whole story
has its origins in Uruguay, where a cannibalistic tribe has terrorized a
community for long, killing many a local, including priests and nuns ...
Now The Raid is a little bit hard to follow as it tells
not one but four stories that are interlinked but aren't necessarily in
chronological order but the film jumps between different narrative levels
rather associatively - to often fascinating effect though -, so much so
that over stretches the titular raid takes backseat. That said, in terms
of horrors, this movie works really well, it's a kind of throwback to
South-European horror fare from the 1970s and 80s, what with its star
imagery, its jump scares, its practical effects, and even the killers' own
theme music. So if this style of horror's at all your thing, you'll find
plenty to like about this movie.
