Gangster Fallon (Gavin MacLeod) has just taken over the gang of his
former boss (Sam Scar) who has been gunned down mysteriously by a couple
of cops, and now he wants to squeeze more money our of his turf than his
predecessor ever did. One of his victims, barowner Mother (Hope Emerson)
refuses to pay and instead turns to private eye Peter Gunn (Craig
Stevens), who tries to reason with Fallon ... and as a consequence, her
bar is blown up. Gunn reacts quickly though, taking one of Fallon's
henchmen (Jack Weston) captive and forcing all kinds of information
concerning Fallon's organisation out of him. Then he makes the henchman
call his boss pretending to blackmail him - and as a consequence, Fallon
sends to fake cops, the same ones who have killed his predecessor, around
to take care of the treacherous henchman. They shoot him but are soon
tracked down and shot by the real cops themselves - and with this,
Fallon's whole organisation caves in. Crime shows on TV were a
dime a dozen even in the late 1950's, but this one is better than most of
the bunch, basically because it puts more emphasis on atmosphere, a
no-nonsense attitude without becoming pretentious, and a certain coolness
triggered by its directorial effort, its ensemble cast but also its pretty
smooth jazz score.
