Brenner (Lou Krugman), an underworld bigshot convicted to life in
prison, makes a daring (but successful) escape right from the courtroom he
was convicted in. Now police is looking for him all over the country, but
only one man, Cliffy (Walter Burke), ironically a blind man, knows where
exactly to look, and because he thinks Brenner is after his life, he
spills the beans to private eye Peter Gunn (Craig Stevens) - and a few
hours later ends up dead, mangled to death in a bizarre way. Gunn is
able to track Benner's track to a mental institution - but unfortunately,
brenner seems to run the institution and before long, Gunn finds himself
thrown into a padded cell, which he is forced to share with Bruno (Tor
Johnson), a mind-controlled super-sized brute who has mangled Cliffy and
now plans to do the same with Gunn. The police, that has been on Gunn's
trail all the way, arrives just in time to save him from being killed, and
brings everything to a happy ending. Another atmospheric
episode of Peter Gunn, carried by a competent cast and a
cool and jazzy score, this one is just a bit too similar to the 1948
thriller Behind Locked Doors
by Budd Boetticher - down to Tor Johnson playing the same role in the film
and this episode - to totally convince. Still, it's quite entertaining.
