Bascally this film features two stories that are not really connected to one another: The first one is about a young American marine biologist (Alex Wanebo) who leaves her old life completely behind (so much so that she even destroys her cellphone) to travel to Costa Rica in search of a rare fish said to be found in the jungles here - a fish that so far only exists in rare anecdotal evidence and that's said to lure those who see it into drowning deaths ...
Story number two revolves arouns a lonely fisherman (Mario Chacón) who wishes for a son - so when a crab grants him a wish for throwing her back into the sea, he wishes for just that, and soon enough saves a castaway (Spencer Bang) from drowning, a young man who then stays on as his apprentice and whom the fisherman soon has fatherly feelings for. But this combination is just too good not to end in disaster ...

Now if you like your films briskly paced, narratively stringent and following strict rhyme and reason, you mght as well give this one a pass as it's a film that meanders a bit, features scenes that are meditative rather than made to drive the story along, and The film often chooses atmosphere over narrative storytelling. Plus, its tendency towards magic realism destroys all attempts at strict logic. And all of this really works for the movie, it's more or less a mood piece and two modern fairy tales rolled into one - and if any or all of this sounds appealing to you, then definitely give Pescador a try.
