Oh boy ! Another one of these incredibly badly written Outer
Limits episodes. I will try to recount it the best I can but I
doubt that I'll be able to really capture the absurdity of this one ...
Ok, so there's this secret organisation, the Invisibles, that
hires agents - mainly lowlife and the like - to spread alien parasites
throughout the world. The parasites by the way are injected via an alien
that looks like a locust with hairs and therefore totally ridiculous.
Why any human would like to join this organisation since its sole
purpose is an alien invasion of earth we don't know. And why anybody would
want to be infected by the alien parasite (which is one of the conditions
of joining the Invisibles) the episode doesn't even start to explain.
The Invisibles though are infiltrated by an US-agent, Spain (Don
Gordon), and he befriends a fellow Invisible, Panetta (Tony Mordente), and
tries to keep him from the evil influence of the Invisibles.
Then the Invisibles send Spain on his first assignment, to put a locust
on General Clarke (Neil Hamilton) and therefore infect him. However, the
whole assignment turns out to be a trap, as the Invisibles have long found
Spain out and actually now want to once more have the locust infect him
...
Why Spain has shaken the alien infection the first time quite so easily
is never explained, by the way.
Spain gets away, but is run over by the car of General Clarke's wife
(Dee Hartford), which breaks his legs. But since the general's wife
doesn't like the general very much, she drives him away to safety ...
For some reason (and don't even ask why), Spain with his injured leg
soon returns to the Invisibles HQ, to pay Panetta a social visit, however,
Panetta's assignment turns out to be to put a locust onto him. Panetta
makes an escape, but since his leg is still injured, he's pretty slow and
after a time falls and has to crawl. The chase scene that ensues -
crawling Panetta versus hairy locust - has to be one of the funniest
chases in TV-history - but it's supposed to be taken seriously.
In the end, good wins over evil in Panetta and he sacrifices his own
life saving his friend Spain from the locust ...
I can't but repeat: Oh boy !
Of course, this episode quite obviously contains several scenes of
unintentional humour (the hairy locust alone is worth a chuckle or two and
the locust-crawling man-chase just has to be seen to be believed), but
overall the whole episode is just like the story would suggest: Pretty
bad.
