A group of scientists figures the Cold War and nuclear deterrent is too
much for humanity to bear, and to reunite all people they have to fake an
alien invasion. So one of them, Allen (Robert Culp), is chosen to be
turned into an alien, who will land in front of the UN to ... well
threaten humanity. It's only when he is already in the process of being
surgically transformed into an alien that he learns that his wife Yvette
(Geraldine Brooks), who thinks him dead, is pregnant from him, which
causes him to temporarily freak out. And Yvette, too, believes there is
something not quite right about her husband's death, but Doc Phil (Leonard
Stone), head of the whole operation, manages to keep things going
smoothly, and ultimately, Allen, who is now totally looking like an alien
(and played by Janos Prohaska) is launched into space. However, somehow he
doesn't manage to land in front of the UN but very near our scientists'
research lab ... where he dies, but not without seeing his wife one last
time, who has no difficulties recognizing him despite the fact that he now
looks totally different and not even human ...
And here is where the American Cold War-propaganda violently kicks in,
as the voice of the narrator essentially labels the scientists as
spineless cowards for their attempt to unite the earth's people and claims
American values like strength and determination to be the only
requirements to win the Cold War ... what ?
Essentially, the plot of this episode is silly as it is, but at the
end, when the concluding narration sets in, the episode (and the series as
a whole) shows its true colours - unreflected American Cold War
propaganda. Depending on your mood you might find this wonderfully
ridiculous or simply annoying, but quite probably you won't find this
little piece of trash any good - hilarious maybe, but not good.
