Ex-boxer Mike Benson (Nick Adams) somehow gets tricked into being at a
murder scene, with him supposed to be the fall guy. However, before the
cops can catch him, he, along with Laura (Nancy Malone), a woman who can
identify him, are teleported to another planet where an alien, the Senator
(Robert C.Johnson), suggests that they take part in a game of life and
death against two alien monsters, with the loser's planet being
erradicated. However, Benson, a cynic since his days in the world of
boxing, declines the offer, even if the Senator threatens to destroy the
planet earth in five years time. But the Senator gives Benson until
tomorrow to rethink his decision, and Laura to convince him otherwise ...
Back on earth, Benson soon realizes that the police are already after
him and it's only a question of time until they will catch him ... so it's
relatively easy for Laura to persuade him to enter the arena with her
after all.
The arena actually is a small, earthlike planet with rivers of acid,
and the alien monsters are armed with spiked boomerangs while our humans
are not armed at all. However, soon one of the aliens turns up dead,
because the other alien figured this way he (she ?) can stretch teh
provisions which are supposed to last for only three days per person. Soon
enough, Laura, whom Benson regarded as nothing but a cheerleader,
figures it would be a good idea to part ways with Benson but keep all of
the provisions, to increase her chances for survival ... then, at the
(anti-)climax the alien monster and Benson fight on a primitive bridge and
both die falling into the acid below. Laura has won, and as a thank you
she is teleported back to earth, and even Benson is given a new lease on
life ...
What ?
This episode just refuses to make much sense, and a badly written
screenplay does not help along one bit either, along with a total lack of
suspense and tension ... which is really a shame since a story like this,
while not entirely original, is destined to be full of suspense and
tension - and actuion, another thing this episode sadly lacks except for a
few moments.
That Fun and Games is not among the worst episodes of Outer
Limits is only because there are even worse episodes around, it's
still pretty bad.
