For today's horror fans, director Jean Rollin is pretty much a fixture
on the European side of horror heavens, with his films being released and
re-released quite constantly, but his career was pretty much an uphill
struggle, with his films, due to their leanings towards symbolism and
surrealism and intentional neglect of genre conventions, often failing to
connect with contemporary audiences - so much so that his debut feature Viol
du Vampire actually caused in-theatre audience outrage -, which in
turn led to Rollin finding himself forced to add nudity and lesbian sex to
his otherwise rather poetic work. Now this documentary tells a
comprehensive story about Rollin's career and also his influences, which
range from comicbooks and film serials to philosophy and fine art. So
Rollin sure is a fascinating subject, but what makes this movie more than
just a dry retelling what Jean Rollin fans already know is its fascinating
mix of film clips and interviews with both collaborators and fans,
contained in a comprehensive narrative, resulting in a quite captivating
contribution to Euro-horror history.
