Most of his life, twentysomething Dok-ja (Ahn Hyo-seop) has been a
weakling, a loser and a nerd, so much so that he eventually retreated from
real life more or less and spent most of his time reading a serialized web
novel, the hero of which, Jung-hyuk (Lee Min-ho) he adored because he
basically was nothing like Dok-ja himself. However, over the years, the
novel lost in popularity and became in fact so niche that Dok-ja became
its only reader - only for it to end in a rather disappointing ending. And
then one day the events of the novel start happening for real, aliens from
outer space pretty much take over earth to make all of humankind ...
protagonists in a deadly gameshow that's supposed to show the basest of
human instincts for the entertainment of extraterrestrials. Thing is, only
Dok-ja knows the novel's video game like rules and thus has an advantage
over everyone else. Dok-.ja also meets Jung-hyuk for real, but finds him a
selfish prick - and yet he knows he has to save him from a dragon that
kills him in the novel, otherwise the world would cease to exist. Jn-hyuk
isn't really interested in a nerd's help though, and even feeds him to a
sea serpend - something that Dok-ja survives as a strengthened man
(earning power points for the serpent's defeat). So Dok-ja and his group -
love interest Sang-ah (Chae Seo-bin), feisty Hee-Won (Im Jin-ah),
tough military man Ji-hye (Kim Jisoo) and little Gil-yeong (Kwon Eun-Sung)
- have to fight themselves through the subway tunnles of the city that are
populated by more and more dangerous monsters in increasingly difficult
scenarios to not only save their own hides but also keep a man who's not
interested in their help from dying ... Now of course, the premise
of this movie is very far-fetched, and while the idea of a guy finding
himself in a video game might sound novel, it's not exactly new, and
arguably, another South Korean film,
The Resurrection of
the Little Match Girl, from over 20 years earlier did it
better ... but all of this doesn't mean that Omniscient Reader:
The Prophecy isn't still a ton of fun as it consists on a barrage
of well-executed setpieces, it doesn't shy away with violence and is
brim-full of nicely conceived special effects - and still manages to tell
its story in a stringent way (even if the film's ultimate message is a bit
syroupy). So basically, if you put on this movie, prepare to be splendidly
entertained.
