Mexican bandit Pandro Zanti (Earl Dwire), the killer of his parents,
comes to the rescue of Sheila Terry, who, along with her father Gabby
Hayes, is fleeing said bandit. Hayes & Terry are grateful to the
stranger, but for the sheriff of the next town (Jack Rockwell), Wayne is
under suspicion of being in league with Pandro Zanti, so when Zanti is
finally caught & tied down at Hayes' cabin, the sheriff, instead of
having Wayne helping to guard the prisoner, ties him up as well, thus
helping Zanti to make an attempt at Hayes' life (for which Wayne is
blamed too) & escape. Luckily, Wayne can free himself too &
track down Zanti, who dies when accidently drinking poisoned water. His
boys (among them Yakima Cannut & Buffalo Bill jr) however, unaware
of Zanti's death, first try to capture Terry, & when that doesn't
work, try to get Wayne, but in the end he can capture them all in Hayes'
mine by exploding one of the entries & having the sheriff wait at
the other.
Another of these very nice Wayne-Monogram-b-Western, fast paced,
beautifully photographed & graced with great stuntwork, done mostly
by Yakima Canutt (though a great slide through a canal on a wooden
plank is visibly done by Wayne himself). The cast is uniformly good too,
with Wayne & Hayes doing their likeable hero- & loveable
sidekick-routines, respectively, as good as usual, Sheila Terry being an
above average leading lady (even though she hasn't got to do much), but
Earl Dwire's performance as fake Mexican (it's pointed out in the movie
he's fake) is just great in a camp sort of way !
