It starts with Billy the Kid (Buster Crabbe) and his saddle pals Fuzzy (Al
St. John) and Jeff (Tex O'Brien) being captured by the law and thrown into
a prison headed by Lt. Ted Morrison - who just happens to be a splitting
image of Billy (and is thus also played by Buster Crabbe). Of course, this
makes it easy for Billy and company to escape custory, he just poses as
Morrison - but they get into an ambush, laid not for them but for
Morrison, but luckily get out alive. They learn it somehow has to do with
Morrison intending to attend the wedding of rich blind ladymary Todd
(Sarah Padden) to her childhood sweetheart Fremont (Hal Price), whom
she'll meet at the wedding for the first time in 40 years, a wedding
Morrison apparently has evidence to prevent. Since Billy isn't a bad guy
per se, he decides to do his best to warn Morrison - but comes to late as
the stage Morrison has gone it has been held up by outlaws and Morrison as
well as the real Fremont (George Morrell) have been killed. So Billy
decides to ride into town posing as Morrison ans mixing things up a bit,
much to the dismay of fake Fremont as well as the baddie behind
everything, Crawford (Charles King), who sends his henchman Turtle (John
Merton) out on mission after mission to kill Billy - to no avail.
Eventually, Crawford even exposes Billy as the outlaw he is, but Fuzzy
dresses up as an army general to free fake army Lt. Billy. On wedding day,
Billy and company go so far as to kidnap fake Fremont, to then learn about
real Fremont's niece Linda (Wanda McKay) coming to the wedding, which
would pretty much be their ace in the sleeve. But Crawford learns about
Linda as well, so he sends out Turtle to kill her - and Turtle almost
succeeds, but ultimately, Billy gets the girl to the wedding safely, where
she exposes fake Fremont, and after a short chase and fistfight, Billy can
overpower Crawford and bring him to justice. Now I wouldn't go so
far as to say Law and Order is one of the best westerns
of Buster Crabbe's stint with PRC, it just lacks this certain something to really
stick out of the crowd and distinguish itself, but given it's a series
western done on the quick and cheap, it isn't too shabby either, the plot
is complex enough to engage interest and features a few twists and turns
even, Buster Crabbe in a dual role is always a joy to see, and the action
is well enough staged for sure. Now that said, this is not a film that
will stick with you more than a few hours at best, but it's at least fun
while watching.
