After quitting her job in celebrity chef Lyna's (Chloé Astor) kitchen,
Cathy (Audrey Lamy) has to find out sous chefs are not as much in demand
as she had hoped and nobody will give her any money to start her own
restaurant. So to not go totally broke, she accepts a job as cook at a
hostel for underaged immigrants - and immediately feels out of place, and
not because she has anything against immigrants but because her ideas of
fine food clash with those of the hostel owners, engaged social worker
Lorenzo (Francois Cluzet) and always optimistic but clumsy Sabine (Chantal
Neuwirth). Plus, she's in way over her head when it comes to cooking for
35 young men allo on her own ,,, and then Sabine and Lorenzo come up with
a solution, why not have a few of the boys help her in the kitchen. At
first, this ounds like a surefire recipe for disaster, but the young men
gradually start to enjoy kitchen work, and especcially the ho#tel's tough
guy Djibril (Mamadou Koita), who at first refuses to learn from a woman,
gradually warms up to her. And before long, Cathy manages to make her
kitchen boys into a bona fide team - and then bad luck strikes when it's
found out that Djibril isn't actually underage and thus old enough to be
deported. Soimething Cathy can't stop,, but she can use her culinary
talents to bring the plight of young migrants to the attention of the
public - using one of the least likely means possible ... Now
one thing's for sure, The Kitchen Brigade is a film that
has its heart exactly in the right spot, and the film's feel-good
atmosphere also makes sure that its message lands softly but powerfully.
And add to that a subtle but elegant directorial effort, just the right
balance between drama and humour, and a suitably relatable cast, and
you're in for a very enjoyable piece of cinema.
The Kitchen Brigade has been released to UK cinemas
