Somewhere in Africa: While Jungle Jim (Johnny Weissmuller) is out to
hunt down a lion who's killing the natives, his son Skipper (Martin
Huston) meets Manderville (Dick Rich), a rich Texan who hunts game for
trophies. Skipper wants to stop him from doing just that because the
animals are his friends, but after a series of mishaps, both the boy and
the Texan find themselves up on a tree hiding from the lion Jungle Jim is
hunting, then they create a bushfire to chase the animal away. Ultimately,
Jungle Jim comes to the rescue, but since Manderville has to learn his
lesson, he eventually finds himself cornered by the lion, and Jungle Jim
jumps in to wrestle the lion and rescue him for good only in the very last
minute. After Johnny Weissmuller's Jungle Jim-series
of B-movies has come to a close, he moved over to television to portray
the character for another year. If anything, the TV-series was a step down
from the series of not-so-great movies, as on TV the series got even more
formulaic and added an annoying kid character to the proceedings.
Furthermore, it was limited to very few sets and wildlife footage was
edited in even more sloppily. This is not to say the television version
was a huge step down from the theatrical version, as this series was made
rather on the cheap as well, but a step down nevertheless. Plus the
TV-version is not half as much fun as the film version.
