Teenaged Jamarcus (Duane Ervin) is a kid like many others, kind at heart
and not a troublemaker per se, but also young enough to make stupid
decisions. And his grandmother (Ruthie Austin), who raised him on her own,
is afraid that he'll end up on the streets, which is why she has contacted
the Big Brother program, basically so Jamarcus can have a male
role model. At first, Jamarcus is less than pleased to hang out with his
"big brother" Jasper (Stephen Cofield jr), but soon they bond over
baseball and over similar life experiences that made them what they are,
and the two end their first day together as good friends- But while
they*re still talking about meeting again, the reality of the streets
catches up with them ...
Now from a pure entertainment point of view, this film takes a bit to kick
into gear, and it's really only the third act when dramatic tension really
does set in. However, judging this movie purely by its entertainment value
would be the wrong approach as it's a film that's more about social issues
that don't always have easy answers, and it brings its story across with a
lot of heart. And a competent cast also helps making this a really
worthwhile short.
