Married couple Jane and Brian Spencer are the electro-pop duo Finkel
- which incidently is also Jane's maiden name -, and to find
inspiration for their new album, they've decided to spend the winter in
the town Jane calls her childhood home ... which is not just any town but
Mackinac, a small town on an island in the middle of Lake Huron, Michigan,
a place where cars are banned and pretty much the only way to get around
is per snow mobile - and snow's a good cue, because there's lots of it in
Mackinac, as the town's experiencing a harsh winter, with the lake frozen
solid enough one can reach the mainland by snow mobile. But the winter's
more than just low temperatures, it also gives the whole island its own,
distinct beauty, something that in this documentary one sees seep into the
music of Finkel ... A very nice insight into the creative
process of the film's protagonists that really hits home because it
(seemingly) doesn't try too hard to be about just that. So instead of
talking heads and lots of studio/rehearsal sessions, the audience is
treated to Jane and Brian just being themselves in various situations, as
they're trying to come to grips with island life, with their music making
and recording sounds in nature just being part of their routine. And the
whole thing comes across as incredibly light-footed and entertaining, so
even if you've never heard of Finkel before (and I freely admit I
haven't), you're pretty much bound to enjoy this movie.
