Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) has a death proof car, meaning a stuntcar
that is secured in such a way that its driver will survive fatal crashes
virtually unscathed - which is of course vital for carstunts in movies.
Thing is, Stuntman Mike doesn't work in movies anymore, he now travels
from town to town always on the lookout for cute girls he can involve in
fatal crashes with him being the sole survivor ... and he has just taken
out a quintet of girls (including a blond Rose McGowan) in Texas.
Switch to Tennessee: Stuntgirl Zoe Bell (herself) has just come to pay
a visit to her friends Kim (Tracie Thoms) and Abby (Rosario Dawson) - but
actually she has mainly come to drive a Dodge Challenger, just like the
one used in the film Vanishing Point ... but not only dricve it,
ride on its hood at full speed - which is when Stuntman Mike catches up
with the girls to do his thing. Thing is though that these girls are not
as easy to kill as the others since Zoe is a gifted stuntgirl and Kim an
ace driver - plus Kim is packing a gun ... and before you know it, the
hunter has become the hunted and after an extended carchase Kim forces
Stuntman Mike into an accident, after which the girls pul him out of his
car and beat him to a pulp ...
Let me start it like this: Death Proof is not a bad
movie, it features some great car action, it features some characters you
can actually care about, and Kurt Russell gives a gret badass performance.
But: The film lacks proper pacing, is overpopulated by minor
characters, features way too many irrelevant scenes, and the long
stretches of dialogue are far not as witty as in his earlier movies. Plus,
the pop culture references that Tarantino has become famous for and that
were sort of hip in the 1990's have become increasingly stale and
annoying. Plus the film doesn't seem to do the B actionmovies of the
1970's it is said to pay hommage to any justice.
By the way, Death Proof was originally part of the double
feature movie Grindhouse which was chopped in two after the film's
failure at the box office thanks to a misguided publicity campaign. Robert
Rodriguez' Planet Terror is its
companion.
