When Calvin (O. Levon Jackson) and Gigi (Serilda Goodwin) arrive at
their son Maison's (Cristofher Griffin) house for the annual family
Christmas celebration, they find nobody in a very Christmas mood, as
Maison has marital problems with his workaholic wife Camilla (KeVann D.
Jarman), Chris (Steven C. Rhodes) and Crystal (Kimberly Meyon) are trying
desparately (and failing) to have off-spring, Monica (Tashawnie Hunter) is
so desparate to be in a relationship she brings arrogant yet idiotic Evan
(John Bonds) to the festivities despite not being in love with him, and
Andrew (Malik Brazile) is still heart-broken for having split up with the
love of his life Kelly (Sheena Faust) a year ago. He tries to mend things
with her, but everytime he's almost there things are spoiled by his
interim fiancée Lola (Tiare Solis), who just can't accept he's broken up
with her. So Calvin and Gigi have plenty of family to sort out ...
Now I won't lie, I'm not the biggest sucker for Christmas
comedies, as they almost as a rule are very much on the cheesy side and
not necessarily ring super-true in their insistance on a Christmas happy
ending. What this movie does rather cleverly though is to split its plot
up into several inter-connected subplots, this way being able to get to
the core of each story without losing itself in the almost mandatory
Christmas kitsh. And a well-paced directorial effort and a solid and
likeable ensemble cast make this one actually a pretty decent Christmas
movie.
