It's 2020, and more or less over night life as we know it has changed
almost without warning due to the Corona lockdowns. Now here's how some
people around the world deal with it: There's Emma (Jessica Costello), an
exchange student in Wuhan of all places, where strict lockdowns prevent
her to return to America to be with her terminally ill mother. There's
Mark (Greg Poppleton) who tries to take care of his deceased sister's
daughter (Audrey Nitschke) while his business is failing and his wife
(Erica Connor) threatens to leave him, and now the only person he can rely
in is his esstranged brother (Kevin Scott Allen) who lives half a worls
away. Then there's Levi (Gil Ben-Moshe), an Australian in a long distance
relationship with an Italian woman (Lital Luzon). And there's also Malik
(Shaun Huff), Jarrell (Andre Doc Williams) and Clarita (Dilia Corujo),
three freelance journalist investiganting a child trafficking ring finding
out that their former boss (Adryanna Elmendorf) who got them fired is at
the center of it all. And that's just some of the stories that 2020 wrote
...
Now I'm sure we've all gotten a little sick of hearing about the Covid era
by now and probably also about lockdown films that are rarely any more
than glorified Zoom-calls. That said, Anno 2020 is more
than just that, as for one it doesn't rely on Zoom calls alone but
actually features some nicely directed scenes with interpersonal
connections. Plus rather than forcing the story into a format it's more
interested in catchng the feel of 2020, warts and all, but also the
occasional beauty. And for that, the film shows lots of heart, and is thus
definitely worth a watch.
