Victorian London in the Christmas season: The priceless Blue Carbuncle
is stolen from its owner, the Countess of Morcar (Rosalind Knight) ... but
Sherlock Holmes' (Jeremy Brett) attention is consumed by a whole different
"case" - to return a hat and a Christmas goose to their rightful
owner. Thing is, he just happens to find the Blue Carbuncle inside the
goose, and when lured into a trap, the rightful owner (Frank Middlemass)
of the goose shows no signs he had even the first idea about its content. So
Holmes decides to deepen his investigations and soon traces the goose back
all the way to where it was bred - to find out the goose breeder (Maggie
Jones) is the sister of the Countess's servant (Ken Campbell), who
actually admits to the theft and hiding the carbuncle in the goose rather
freely. And since Holmes sees the guy is not really a bad man but was led
astray by his mistress, and because it's Christmas, he lets him off the
hook scot-free ... A rather nice episode that has Holmes and
his investigations at its center and allows Jeremy Brett so show what he's
capable of. Only the reconciliatory ending is a bit of a letdown,
actually. Still, fun to watch.
