Sir Gyles (John Longden) kills the king's commissioner (Hal Osmond), a
man still loyal to King Richard, and while not even the Sheriff of
Nottingham (Alan Wheatley) approved of the murder, which happened in his
castle no less, he too knew that the man had to be dealt with as the
Sheriff has been cheating the crown out of a considerable sum of money.
But the really mean part of the story is that Sir Gyles puts the blame of
the murder on Maid Marian (Bernadette O'Farrell), who actually tried to
protect the Commissioner - and the evidence against Marian seems to be
overwhelming, so much so that she is condemned to death. But she demands
trial by battle, meaning a hero has to fight it out for her innocence with
Sir Gyles. Of course she has set her hopes on Robin hood's (Richard
Greene) assistance, but he has been injured in a previous fight with Sir
Gyles and will not be able to perform - and none of the noblemen of all
England seems to be willing or able to help her ... and thus in the end,
Robin - in disguise - shows up to help her after all, and despite his
injury he fights and defeats Sir Gyles, even if he almost dies himself
doing so ... Mediocre episode that seriuosly lacks the suspense
the story would have demanded, and while the whole build-up suggests a
surprise ending, in the end it ends just like every other episode, with
Robin saving the day ...
