Liza's (Diana Garle) parents (Denise Gossett, Anbton Simone) have been
killed in a car accident that left her wheelchair-bound, and since then
she suffers from survivor's guilt that led to two suicide attempts. That
said, she's also a brilliant programmer, which got her a nice job at the 9
Windows website, a site where local businesses can livestream to
advertise their products and services to respective local audiences. Thing
is, anyone on 9 Windows can livestream locally, not just
businesses, which leads to quite a few oddballs online - culminating in a
guy burning a live puppy. This distresses Liza so much that she calls the
police, but the detective on the case Boyle (William Forsythe) tells her
there's little they can do, as technically burning one's puppy is no more
than a misdemeanour. Thing is, a few days later the same guy (under a
different usernam) livestreams again, this time killing a person. Again,
Doyle's on the case, but again he can do little because he has nothing to
go on but Liza's statement as the killer has since deleted his account and
the company doesn't save livestreams from deleted users. Only Liza's
masseur (and eventual romantic interest) Jeff (Christopher Millan)
believes her, and that's more than enough motivation for Liza to go on
investigating on her own - after all, she has always had a soft spot for
criminology and before the accident wanted to train to become an FBI
agent. Soon more murders happen that are livestreamed on 9 Windows,
and eventually Liza gathers enough info for Doyle to send by an FBI agent,
Thurgood (Michael Paré). And she manages to outpace even him when it
comes to this investigation. Thing is, while she might be on the killer's
trail, he might also be on hers ... To a degree, 9 Windows
is of course Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window transferred to the
digital age with an added horror undercurrent. At the same time, the film
doesn't feel like it, as Lou Simon, well-savvy when it comes to suspense
filmmaking, doesn't ape Hitchcock's style or Rear Window's plot
structure and twists but features a well-crafted script of its own. And a
very solid cast really bring the film to life and turn this one into
pretty awesome genre entertainment.
