Your new movie Deep Shock - in a few words, what is it about, and what can you tell us about your character?

I play Sarah, a young woman who has had a really awful time, lost some members of her family and never really recovered. I think the film explores the idea that a person may appear fine after a trauma but the reality is very different, a pretty terrifying idea for all of us.

What did you draw upon to bring your character to life, and how much Muireann Bird can we find in Sarah Taylor?

I’m not sure there’s much similarity between Sarah and I. I think I’ve had a much easier time in life. I always find it really useful to draw energy from the sets, costume and design of a film and these things were all really clear with Deep Shock so that was really helpful for me.

Deep Shock's horror theme - something you can at all relate to?

I think the idea of a hidden psychosis, or an unhealed trauma is really terrifying one so yes! The horror theme of the film is certainly one which scares me.

How did you get involved with the project to begin with?

A lot of the crew were working in Ireland whilst casting was happening so I think that’s why I was initially asked to audition. I just got sent the script and it went from there.

What can you tell us about your director Davide Melini [Davide Melini interview - click here], and what was your collaboration with him like?

I really enjoyed the experience. It was obvious that Davide really had a passion for the film and a very clear view of what he wanted and that is always great for me as an actor.

What can you tell us about the shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere?

I had a really good time on the shoot, we had a lovely mix of people, including lots of fantastic Irish women! I think it really helped the atmosphere that we lived together. It was a real family affair.

Any future projects beyond you'd like to share?

I’m currently in New York, doing a great show with the Nation Theatre of Scotland, which is a lot of fun. Who knows for the future!

What got you into acting to begin with, and did you receive any formal training on the subject?

I started working quite young, I think probably because I read a lot and really enjoy telling stories. I trained at Arts Ed, London.

What can you tell us about your filmwork prior to Deep Shock?

I’ve had loads of lovely experiences with mostly Irish films, I particularly love short films. I think it’s tough to make something coherent with not a lot of time, but very satisfying when it happens.

How would you describe yourself as an actress, and some of your techniques to bring your characters to life?

I like to work with text a lot, I do more theatre than film so perhaps that’s why! When it comes to being on set, I come prepared but willing to see what happens. I try and just respond to what’s happening in the scene and what the other actors are doing.

Actresses (and indeed actors) who inspire you?

Loads! I think Ruth Negga and Ruth Bradley are brilliant. Cillian Murphy and Lia Williams are also favourites.

I’ve never been able to settle on favourite music or film, it is just changes too much!

... and of course, films you really deplore?

Equally, I don’t often hate films, and it probably doesn’t last long if I do!

Your website, Facebook, whatever else?

I’m not great at social media to be honest, I just about manage my emails!

Thanks for the interview!
