Your upcoming movie The Skin He Wears - in a few words,
what's it about?
That's a tough one without giving too much away - well, let's say it's
about bananas, and not only those that grow on trees and retire in
fruit bowls. And it's about a tattoo artist who has just designed the
perfect tattoo - high on 'shrooms of course -, and now he wants it
somewhere on his body. Thing is, he's covered in tats already, except for
- well, a somewhat banana-shaped bodypart, which he would just never touch
... with a needle. So there's a dilemma of course, and his solution to it
is - not super-legal but definitely the stuff for nightmares.
So how did the project fall together in the first place?
Now the horror legend that is Lynn Lowry [Lynn
Lowry interview - click here] decided to make her
directorial debut and had this idea for a film - and as she appreciates me
as a writer I guess, she asked me to turn her idea into a script. Now I read the
idea, and my first reaction was "no way this can work, much less as a
comedy" (I didn't mention earlier this is going to be a comedy, did
I?),
then my second thought was "girl, you need a really good writer to pull
this off." And then it struck me, maybe she thinks I AM the kind of writer
to pull it off. So I meditated about it for a few weeks, and suddenly the
pieces fell into place and I came up with this piece of utter weirdness -
which I also think has a lot of heart.
What were your sources of inspiration when writing The Skin He
Wears?
Well, the theme was all gross-out - which I totally enjoy in principle,
just not my style as a writer. So I went the other way, looking for the
heart of the story - so in a way I'm inclined to say that films like
Psycho and
Peeping Tom were an influence, just not consciously so to be
honest - basically the concept of a killer as not just a bad guy but a
likeable (at least before you know about his homicidal tendencies)
character fascinated me. Another source were vintage German police
procedurals, as for some reason their utter seriousness went so well with the film's theme.
Do talk about The Skin He Wears approach to both horror
and humour? Horror - well, the film will have at least
the male half of the audience squirming in
their seats, that's for sure. And frankly. I wouldn't be surprised if some
girls said "yesss, finally!" That said, yes there will be blood, but it
probably won't be as guesome as can be.
As for humour ... well, I'll just say you'll probably see some of
the sickest but also funniest dick jokes in the movie, and there's some
decidedly cartoonish violence in it. But as usual wich me, much of the jokes
are hiddden in the dialogue.
What can you tell us about your collaboration with Lynn Lowry on
The Skin He Wears?
I think I can say with some authority that Lynn likes me as a writer,
otherwise she wouldn't have picked me to write her directorial debut -
and please don't think I don't feel ridiculously flattered by this.
That said, having worked with one another before, we I think have developed some
kind of shorthand where we just know what the respective other
would like, so in this case our discussions on the script were short and superficial,
so much so that I can hardly remember them - and I doubt she can either.
You've worked with Lynn Lowry before - so what can you tell us
about your previous collaborations, and how did the two of you first meet,
even? Indeed I did! Well our first collab was on
There's No Such
Thing as Zombies, which was a project that felt doomed for me
as a first-time producer, wtith both the lead actress and the original
director backing out. I was about to throw the towel when Lynn contacted
me asking to be part of the project. Problem was, I didn't have a role for
her. But that problem really was its own solution right there, as her
character's ark did all the world-building for the film - so much so that before
we shot the feature I chose to turn her scenes (and some others) into a
short, Talk of the
Dead, to help get the feature the funds it needed, and that
short turned out to be a festival favourite, garnering us many an award. So
obviously we worked together time and again, most recently on
Ready for My Close Up,
and I think our professional appreciation for one another only grew with each project.

Back to The Skin He Wears - you're currently running a
fundraiser for your film, right? So what can you tell us about your
campaign?

terms of perks, we're got all the usual stuff, including roles in the
film and producer credits, but the real killer is, tattoo virgin Lynn Lowry is to have herself
tattooed next to one very lucky fan - who'll also get their tat- If
that's not dedication, I have no idea what is!
Once the budget's in place, what's the schedule - and any idea
when and where the movie might be released yet?
Filming is due in August and then the film will enter the festival cirtuit
- though I honestly wouldn't know when it's due to start playing in
festivals as many film fests plan their schedules months in advance. But I
think our film has all the right ingrediences to play well with festival
crowds. Any future projects you'd like to share?
Nothing super-definite, but at the moment preparing a ghosthunting comedy
called Ghosts of the Asylum for pre-production. If everything goes right,
this one will have a cult horror cast to end all cult horror casts.
