Your new movie When
Darkness Falls - in a few words, what is it about, and what can you
tell us about your character in it?
The film is about a couple of American girls who go trekking in the
beautiful Scotland and all is good until they encounter some dodgy
characters and things go horribly wrong. I had the role of Jess who
is a character that goes on quite the journey. Jess is the sort of
character that doesn’t often live on the wild side, and the journey she
embarks on definitely pulls her out of her comfort zone in which she
must find her strength.
What did you draw upon to bring your character to life, and how
much Michaela Longden can we find in Jess? I am actually quite the opposite of Jess in many ways, at the
start she is very regimented and controlled whereas I have always
been a little wild and always up for doing something spontaneous.
That was one thing that drew me into the character though that she
was very different to me. A lot of the characters I’ve played in
the past have been very similar to me so that posed a new challenge.
As the film goes on though Jess finds so much strength, confidence
and bravery and I felt that I could connect with that part of her so
much more - I definitely have more fire to my belly!
With When
Darkness Falls being a mostly outdoors movie, would you at all
call yourself an outdoorsy person? Oh yes, I am always going out on a
hike. Whilst filming I was actually the one everyone thought was
bonkers because whilst they were all catching up on sleep from the
night shoot I would be up early to go for a hike. The location was
so so beautiful I couldn’t not! I am at peace when I am outdoors!
I love nature, it is my ideal day going for a hike and then a Sunday
dinner. How did you get
involved with the project in the first place, and what drew you to it? I applied on a casting page, and what
really drew me into it was that I would get to go and film in
Scotland! It was filmed during Covid and for me this was such a
highlight of my Covid experience. Obviously actors suffered
tremendously in lockdown, so for me this gave me hope that
potentially all was not lost and people were still making movies.
The people in the project also drew me into it as soon as I met the
crew and cast I knew I wanted to be a part of it. It was such a
wonderful experience the team were so welcoming and incredible to
work with. To
what extent could you itentify with When
Darkness Falls' approach to the thriller genre? It has lots of twists and
turns along the way, and I think the story is really strong in that way.
You never know what’s coming. What
can you tell us about When
Darkness Falls' director Nathan Shepka [Nathan
Shepka interview - click here], and what was your
collaboration like?
Nathan is a wonderful director and fabulous to
have around on set as he’s absolutely hilarious. He gives you
total freedom of expression and is always open for discussion. He is
so easy to work with too. He wants his actors to get involved and
collaborate and really tries to make them feel comfortable. He was
even coming to me for acting advice as he knew I was a screen acting
teacher, which really shows how grounded he is! A few words about the shoot as such,
and the on-set atmosphere? The set atmosphere was
very very calm. Even at 4am in the freezing cold with blood running
down my face everyone was in high spirits.
Any future projects you'd
like to share?
I have just finished filming the lead role of Margot
in Fowler Media’s ghost horror The Ghost Within. I am super
excited about this project as the script is insane. This was one of
my most challenging roles to date as Margot really does go through a
lot during the film, so it was great to be given the opportunity to
be cast as her.
