Marcos Loayza was born in la Paz, Bolivia, but studied film in Cuba
where he picked up a knack for the indistry. Returning home, he went on
to become a forerunner in a country where film just now seems to be on
the upswing.
Since taking office, President Evo Morales has been big on
social reform and placing an emphasis on the use of Bolivian resources
for and by Bolivians rather than outsiders. It is hoped that somewhere
along the line he might do something to help upgrade and develop the
film industry in this country, which is a hotbed waiting to be developed
if funding comes.
"President Morales has more pressing issues at hand right now than film alone," commented Loayza, but indicated he, along
with others, hoped there might be a big boost in gvoernment support for
the film world down the road.

company, check out http://www.cineboliviano.com
for info though the text, as of now, is only in Spanish.
On the surface some of the projects this director has
turned out make him sound like a religious zealot. Cuestión de Fe/A Question Of Faith
(1995) and El Corazón de Jesús/The Heart Of Jesus (2003) soak of Christian tidings, like something from
the Left
Behind-series, watning people to turn or burn. Such is not the
case and so much for judging a book by its cover as the old saying goes
- or more fittingly, a film by the packaging.
The aforementioned films are both black comedies, almost sinister in
nature at times and not the religious propaganda they might sound like
on the surface.
Dark humor in fact, has become a trademark for this particular individual. It is just a pity his works have not reached
more of the
nonspanish speaking world thus far.
In spite of being known almost exclusively in South
America, where he has already gained a name for himself, Loayza has
plans to expand. He had a number of new projects on the burner for
2008 and 2009, including more of the same dark humor and other ventures
unlike his past projects.
Through his film company, Loayza also offers a number of
services for outsiders wishing to film in Bolivia. Costs are far
more economical than for similar ventures in Europe or the USA.
Bolivia might well become a focal point for South American
or even world cinema down the road and Marcos Loayza might well find
hismelf at the forefront somewhere in the future.
