Your new movie Nyctophobia
- in a few words, what is it about?
Nyctophobia
is the third part of a psycho/horror trilogy (Skizophrenia, Claustrophobia). It's a metaphoric trilogy based on common fears and disturbing
diseases.
Now I'm guessing not all that many of my readers know what
"nyctophobia" actually means - so could you at all enlighten us,
and how much research did go into this actual phobia your film is based
on? And can you at all relate to it, personally? Nyctophobia
is the common fear of darkness, and in this short movie darkness represents the
evil that it hides in our mind, in our souls. But when this evil emerges
from the depth of our ego... it's too late... and so there will be the moment when
this evil returns to our lives... it is absolutely related to my life. (Other)
sources of inspiration when dreaming up Nyctophobia? My nightmares
as a child of course. What
can you tell us about your co-writer Paolo Mercadante, and what was your
collaboration like? He contacted me after he watched my
past short movies. He's a videomaker and editor at Urca TV, an italian
videomaking agency that works mainly in advertising. He also founde an
independent production label, Sette
Films. I came up with the subject for
Nyctophobia
and after that, me and Paolo started to work together on the screenplay. It
was a very nice experience. Paolo has many technical skills regarding
adapting things for the screen, but especially as a director of photography.
Do talk about Nyctophobia's
approach to horror for a bit? Nyctophobia
is mainly a
supernatural and psychological short movie. Not much blood but based on
suspense, twists and jump scares. What
can you tell us about your directorial approach to your story at hand? After
we writing the story, we started to look for appropriate locations to shoot the movie
especially the "HELL location". We found this
"liberty style" and quite dark house. We studied hard to create a
very dark atmosphere on set and also in post production. We worked to make
an intense and psychological story with many twists.
Do
talk about your cast, and why exactly these people?
The lead, Roberto Ramon, is a very good actor and
friend. He started acting at theater with a master of old Napolitan comedy.
I started the trilogy with him. Roberto D'Antona is "The Devil".
He's a very talended actor and director. He has made many award-winning works,
for example the webseries Azas and Jhonny, the recent TV series
The
Reaping (now available on demand ,and on DVD and Blu-ray in May 2017), and now he's working on
the thriller movie The Wicked Gift, available in Italian theaters very soon. He also won an
American Movie Award as best supporting actor in the feature film Insane. I'm very honored to have him in my short movie. For Auora Elli and
Giulia Schaaf (ghost children) this was their first experience on set. I
got to know these talented children during a "zombie walk" in my city.
They gave an amazing "zombie cosplay performance" at this event.
Michael Segal (Executioner) [Michael
Segal interview - click here] is a very talented actor and producer. He's
acting for many shorts, feature films and TV series all around the world. His
acting skills and scenic presence are very impressive. Orfeo Orlando is an actor and director know in
Italy. He made many TV shows, series and theatrical feature films (L'Uomo che
Verrà,
Zoolander 2). I got to know him recently and was very excited to work with
him.
Georgia Federica is a beautiful Italian model. This was her first
experience acting in a short movie. Tommaso Preda and Giuseppe La Rocca ,
friends and co-workers, complete this amazing cast. Everyone of these guys
and girls did their work very well!

A
few words about the shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere? We
shot the movie in five days in more of 80 hours of set. We shot it last
summer. The on-set experience was very nice. All involved worked very well. It
was also very exhausting. Every day we started at 9:00 and finished at 2:00 pm. The
$64-question of course, when and where will Nyctophobia
be released onto the general public? It will be
released to general public probably when we finish our festival run around the world. Anything you can
tell us about audience and critical reception of Nyctophobia
yet? The short is now selected for some festivals
around the world. We hope for a positive response by the festivals'
audiences. Furthermore, we have received some very good reviews.
Any future projects you'd like to share? Now
we're working on the feature film Clara. It's a ghost story inspired
by an haunted Italian mansion called "Villa Clara". We will
start shooting the movie as soon as we start with a crowfunding
campaign and we are searching for sponsors and co-producers. And we hope
to shoot the entire movie whitin 2018 Your/your
movie's website, Facebook, whatever else?
