Your Fan Boy Film Festival - in a few words, what's the philosophy behind it?

I wanted to give people a chance to attend a film festival without the lines, without the lotteries in hopes to see the movie they want. Fan Boy Film Festival takes out the headaches from film festivals and lets you enjoy the films in the comfort of your home. I also wanted to create a platform where artists (filmmakers) – I refer to them as artists because I think every filmmaker is creating art – can share their work without having to deal with the traditional Hollywood B.S.

The Fan Boy Film Festival will be held online - so what's the idea behind that?

Technology eliminates barriers to connectivity. An online film festival can bring filmmakers from around the world to one place at one time and connects them with each other as well as audiences.

Besides the traditional categories feature films and shorts, the Fan Boy Film Festival also features (as separate categories) smart device films and even memes - how did that come about?

Fan Boy is progressive. These days films can be made on non-traditional equipment. I can go out and shoot a film on my iPhone and with all the apps available edit it to be a great quality film. We wanted to recognize these types of films. Criteria for a film doesn’t mean it HAS to be made on a traditional camera. No other film festival that I know has a category like this. Maybe we’ll pave the way.

As for the Meme Contest – memes are fun. A little added bonus for our fans to be creative and get a chance to win $1,000. Everyone should go create a meme or two.

Let's get to the basics: Where can one submit, and could you give us the main submission guidelines, deadlines and fees?

Filmmakers can go to www.FanBoyFilmFestival.com to register for a FREE account and submit their film. We are currently open for submissions. The deadline is July 1st. The festival runs from July 15-August 26th.

What are some of the qualities you're looking for in the submissions for the fest?

We are accepting all types of film from all genres. We feel like every filmmaker should enter. Just no porn.

Having talked about submissions, do talk about the prizes handed out, and the voting process?

We are handing $10,000 to the film with the most votes, $5,000 to the Best Film Created on a Smart Device and $1,000 to the Best Meme. The cash prizes are decided entirely on votes by registered Fan Boy users. Anyone can visit www.FanBoyFilmFestival.com and sign-up for an account. It’s completely FREE. The festival is 100% FREE. We don’t believe in stuffy judge panels or secret dark room meetings by “Hollywood veterans” who decide on the merit of a film. Ultimately, we believe that it’s the fans who should judge a film. That’s why the winners are decided 100% on votes by registered Fan Boy users.

What were your inspirations for running the Fan Boy Film Festival, and what are your qualifications to run a fest like this?

My older brothers got me into film. They would introduce me to films and we would binge on films. It was the way we bonded. My favorite film they introduced me to was Clerks. We watched that together like 40 or 50 times and were like “we need to be making films”. My brother went off and launched the first online film festival a few years back. He is no longer doing it, but I decided to launch my own rendition.

What makes me qualified? Geesh! I’m a good webmaster I guess… No. I’ve been surrounded by very talented people in the entertainment industry for many years and I know how to run a business. I took my brother’s vision and reshaped it to become my own. I hope to build on this festival and do it for many more years.

Is the Fan Boy Film Festival supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime thing or do you plan to make it annual? And other future projects you'd like to share?

I think I just answered this question above. But to expound – I would like to grow this into a year round event and open it up to other events other than film. I want Fan Boy to become a pop culture hub.

A couple of more personal questions: Your favourite movies?

I love anything Kevin Smith makes.

... and of course, films you really deplore?

I’m strange. I consider even the films that are regarded as bad to be entertaining.

Anything else you're dying to mention and I have merely forgotten to ask?

Have you signed up for an account on Fan Boy yet?

Thanks for the interview!
