Your new movie We Go Again - in a few words, what's it about, and what can you tell us about your character?

2 people: navigating life, love, dreams, disappointments. Amy struggles with feeling too much, doing too little, and how to cope when you don’t know how to cope.

What did you draw upon to bring your character to life, and how much Charlotte Chiew can we actually find in Amy?

Smells, tastes, sight, sounds, touch. I like to respond to everything around me when playing a character. Something outside of me always triggers something inside; it is a good scene when I follow the instincts and ride the waves. How much of Charlotte Chiew will you see in Amy? Depends on the camera angle, I guess – anywhere between 0 to 100 %

How did you get involved with the project in the first place, what drew you to it?

I don’t know how many actors you’ve interviewed (or how many actually tell you the truth) – actors don’t really get to choose their projects. We’re told to audition, then we’re told we got the role. (If you don’t get the role, they usually don’t tell you.) And of course we’ll do it! Who knows when we’ll get to act again…?

Do talk about We Go Again's director Oliver Jolliffe [Oliver Jolliffe interview - click here], and what was your collaboration like?

He’s an efficient man of few words. Tells you succinctly what he’s looking for, and then he makes you look beautiful. (He eats a lot of M&Ms.)

We Go Again wasn't the first time you've worked with Oliver Jolliffe - so what can you tell us about your previous collaborations?

The first time I worked with Oliver, I really thought he didn’t like me (maybe I’m right - he doesn’t, who knows? He doesn’t say much about that). He barely said 10 words to me! I thought, oh well, doesn’t look like I’ll be working with this one again. But that scene turned out beautiful! And several years later, he’s got me back for We Go Again… and can I say, it’s beautifully shot too.

Back to We Go Again: A few words about the shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere?

Definitely efficient. Possibly serene. No stress, no off-screen drama. Zuza Tehanu and I chatted a lot about everything and nothing. We were probably the loudest parts of the project, on-and-off-set.

Any future projects you'd like to share?

I’m starting prep work for narrating the audiobooks for a romance series. The best thing about audiobooks is that I get to play ALL the characters...

What got you into acting in the first place, and did you receive any formal training on the subject?

I was a shy and awkward kid. My mom heard that drama lessons was a great way to make a shy child more confident. (Not really true; I’m still shy and awkward, I’ve just learnt how to act like I’m not.)

What can you tell us about your filmwork prior to We Go Again?

We Go Again is hands down, the most major role I’ve played in film. Most of my work has been indie short films, smaller roles in feature films and TV series. I’d love to do more!

How would you describe yourself as an actress, and some of your techniques to bring your characters to life?

Back in acting school, everyone said I was a dramatic actress (as opposed to comic), and I love a good heart-wrenching story. The one thing I always bring to acting is my pleasure and the reminder to follow my instincts. It’s going to sound weird but I promise you I take a lot of pleasure in crying.

Actresses (and indeed actors) who inspire you?

Actors. A female who acts is an actor. It is a profession, not a gender noun; you wouldn’t call a female doctor a doctress, would you? Meryl Streep, Wallace Shawn, Anah Ruddin, Stephen Chow...
