They say beauty's in the eye of the beholder ... well, in this day and
age, maybe not anymore in times of social media - and thus, Marsha (Casey
Killoran), a not perfectly shaped (but still very cute) girl, who has set
up a profile that attracts a ridiculous amount of both lovers and haters
... and thus she is a perfect character to be exploited by big business.
So thus, thanks to her new agent Tara (Ruibo Qian), she soon gets
residence in a swanky apartment, gets a shitload of endorsement deals ...
and all she has to do is lose 30 pounds in the next three months. Under
Tara's wings, Marsha really thrives at first, her show reaches millions,
so much so that there are people out there doing parodies of her, and her
lofe to fitness trainer Will (Mark Junek) really hits a nerve with
the viewers - but eventually things go South when her cat dies from some
product she endorsed, Will actually only wanted to have her in his life to
push his energy drink brand, and Marsha fails to lose the pounds she was
supposed to - so is there any way to escape this downward spiral? Virtual
Beauty is a very clever little film that treads the line between
romantic comedy and psycho thriller very well - to ultimately become a
very biting media satire that successfully picks on society's much too
standardized view of what beauty might be like, and our views on fame -
and it's made possible not only by a directorial effort that's very much
aware of its roots, solid central performances ... and or course, the
presence of some real life social media "personalities" doesn't
hurt one bit either ...
