Since man - and especially the Enterprise's Captain Kirk (William Shatner) - is a curious creature, it is decided to follow the path of the ship from 200 years ago and go into a purple cloud ... not too good an idea since the ship comes out of it with its warp drive badly damaged. And it seems, one crewmember, navigator Mitchell (Gary Lockwood) seems to have his inborn ESP-powers vastly increased ... and soon enough he feels like God.</p> <p>Following the suggestion of his science officer Spock (Leonard Nimoy) plans to have Mitchell marooned on a deserted planet, where he is to be kept in a forcefield ... but by now Mitchell's ESP-powers are too strong, and mere forcefields can no longer hold him - and he has even found a companion in ship psychiatrist Doc Dehner (Sally Kellerman), whose ESP-powers also seem to have blossomed, if not to his extent.</p> <p>Ultimately Kirk realizes he has to kill Mitchell, in order to save the universe from a megalomaniac all-powerful being hell-bent to be the next God. But he can only do so after he has ensured the help of Doc Dehner, who hasn't totally lost their human feelings yet and who distracts Mitchell long enough for Kirk to give him a sound beating. In the end of course, both Mitchell and Doc dehner are killed in a landslide, and Kirk has saved the universe from a new God ...</p> <p> </p> <p>A rather dull episode that has nothing much to go for it.</p> <p>The occasional <b><i>Star Trek </i></b>viewer will notice (and the Trekkie of course will know): The uniforms of the crew are slightly different, and there is no Doctor McCoy (as played by DeForest Kelly) aboard the ship, instead one Doctor Piper (played by Paul Fix).
