While on patrol through Federation space, the USS Shenzhou encounters
an object of unknown origin that does the best to mask itself - and first
officer Michael Burnham (Soneqa Martin-Green) volunteers to examine the
thing, much against the advice of science officer Saru (Doug Jones), as he
insists the radiation must be too strong for her - but Captain Philippa
Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) lets her go anyhow, trusting Burnham's judgement
and precision on this - after all, Burnham's Vulcan-trained, so what's the
worst that can happen. Well, once on the object, Burnham encounters a
Klingon and only just about kills him before drifting off into space, and
only with luck can the USS Shenzhou retrieve her. Thing is, nobody
believes her Klingon encounter, attributing it to the stress of the
situation and the fact that her parents have been killed in a Klingon raid
- but then a Klingon ship materializes right next to the USS Shenzhou, and
it's more than likely they're not here with peaceful intentions, even if
they do nothing to attack. Burnham insists to strike the first blow, as
this is what the Vulcans had done back when, and since they're at peace
with the Klingons, but the Captain insists to wait, which causes Burnham
to render her unconscious to try to get her will. But the Captain manages
to regain control just before the first shot is fired - and then a score of Klingon battleships soon materialize next to the first
one ... With Star Trek: Discovery, Star
Trek as such has arrived in the age of streaming and binge
watching: Even though this one's the first episode, it doesn't so much set
up the characters and premise but goes immediately into the thick of it
and creates a greater story arc (and several character arcs) upon its
surface it only scratches - and thus it's pretty impossible to judge this
episode's story by its own merits. What the episode does show though are
awesome sets and effects and a strong cast on one hand, a bit too much
Kligon rituals on the other, and it has to be seen if some of the
characters are not merely copies of earlier characters in the Star
Trek universe. Be it as it may, it at least promises a fun ride!
