It was a simple mission: The Defiant, Deep Space Nine's resident space
ship, was to transport the "Orb of Time" from Cardassia to the
space station, but a passenger, Darvin (Charlie Brill), somehow got hold
of the orb and took the Defiant 200 years back in time, right to the
happenings of the classic
series' episode The
Trouble with Tribbles. Why? Turns out that Darvin was the
very Klingon spy who had poisoned the grain supply for Sherman's Planet
back when, but has since fallen into disgrace with the Klingons and since
lived a pitiful life as a tradesman on Cardassia. But if he could turn
back time and somehow keep Kirk (William Shatner) and company from finding
out his plot, he figures he would become a Klingon hero in the alternated
timeline. So Deep Space Nine's Captain Sisko (Avery Brooks), Odo (Rene
Auberjonois), Worf (Michael Dorn), Dax (Terry Farrell), Chief O'Brien
(Colm Meaney) and Doctor Bashir (Alexander Siddig), beam to both the
Enterprise and the space station near Sherman's planet where the whole
story started back when, and try to first track down Darvin, and when they
find him to thwart his plan - which is to kill Kirk by placing a bomb in
one of the hundreds of thousands of Tribbles (little cute living furballs)
which are slowly taking over both the Enterprise and the space station by
breeding at an alarming rate. Now it's up to Sisko and company to find the
bomb before detonation and to try to not alter history - which is harder
than it sounds, as they seem to rather constantly be running into some of
the key players of the events from back when, like Kirk, Spock (Leonard
Nimoy), Bones (DeForest Kelley), Scotty (James Doohan), Uhura (Nichelle
Nichols) and Chekov (Walter Koenig) ... Now The
Trouble with Tribbles was one of the most popular episodes of the
original Star
Trek series, so paying tribute to it is risky business at
best, a recipe for disaster at worst - but this episode gets it absolutely
right. Not only have the looks and style of the original series been
convincingly recreated and the actors of one series copied into the
respective other rather convincingly, this new episode also manages to hit
the tone of the original episode and plays on the same strengths, like its
tongue-in-cheek humour and great interplay between the series regulars,
who are allowed to really milk their characters. It's really fun and does
the original episode great justice.
