Christopher Maitland (Peter Cushing) is a collector of macabre
memorabilia, so when he's offered the skull of the Marquis de Sade by
crooked dealer Marco (Patrick Wymark), he's more than happy to buy it.
Later he learns that the skull was actually stolen from fellow collector
Phillips (Christopher Lee), but Phillips is happy to be rid of it because
he claims the skull has hypnotic powers - which Maitland thinks is
superstitious gobbledegook, until he falls under the skull's spell and
starts killing people, Maitland and Phillips among them. Eventually, the
skull tries to make Maitland killing his wife (Jill Bennett), but when he
sees the cruzifix round her neck, he comes to his senses, so much so that
he even tries to stab the skull (but how do you stab a skull?). The skull
doesn't take lightly to this though and eventually kills Maitland ... An
old-fashioned, blunt and slightly silly piece of horror cinema - and in
the case of The Skull, that actually works for the movie instead of
against it, as its retro-looks spark an instant feeling of nostalgia
(something old movies don't necessarily achieve), its bluntness is
charming , as there is a kind of naivety to it, and in all its silliness,
it never insults its audience intelligence. The film's no masterpiece,
that's for sure, but that doesn't mean it can't be amazingly entertaining
...
