It all starts with a woman being chased down a street, wearing only a
skirt & bra - perfectly tame by today's standards, but this was 1961
... Eventually, her pursuer catches up with her & kills her, after
which our heroes are introduced , Ltd Carson (Kenne Duncan) & Sgt
Stone (Duke Moore), the two cops working on the case. Soon - but rather
inexplicably - they come to the conclusion that a smut picture racket must
be somehow behind it all, because "show me a crime & I show you a
dirty picture that caused it" ...
Of course our cop heroes are right, Gloria Henderson (Jean Fontaine),
the head of a smut picture racket, has hired a sex maniac, Dirk Williams
(Dino Fantini), to kill some of her girls who know too much about her
organisation for her. The cops even know about Gloria's organisation, but
have no concrete evidence against her, so be content with arresting some
small fry from her racket every now and again, and make a few friendly
visits to Gloria's various outlets & studios just to remind her that
they are sttill here.
The tide is only turned when Dirk the Maniac gets out of control &
decides to do a killing without Gloria telling him to ... & wouldn't
you know it, this time he's uncautious & leaves behind a perfect set
of fingerprints.
Soon enough the cops have figured out his identity, problem is they
don't know how to catch them - so they do the only sensible thing:
Put a man in woman's cloths and send him to Dirk's favourite park as
bait ... and Dirk really seems to swallow the bait, & in the end, it's
only Johnny Ryde (Carl Anthony), Gloria's right hand man and director, who
saves Dirk's hide ...
But Gloria has meanwhile received 2 visitors (Vic McGee, Nick Raymond)
from the syndicate behind her racket, who want Dirk offed - so she &
Johnny make up a plan to send him out of town in a car with sabotaged
brakes ... & it almost works too, since Dirk's car crashes, only Dirk
has managed to bail out, bearing quite a bit of a grudge against Gloria
& Johnny both.
But Gloria & Johnny are meanwhile at each other's throats about how
to run the racket, when suddenly Dirk shows up & kills Johnny, and
Gloria shoots Dirk, but thinks it was Johnny & wants to blame
everything on Dirk ... it's only when the police she herself has called
arrives & she notices the extra body that she knows she is in a bit of
a jam.
A story that seems to not go anywhere in particular, characters
rambling on endlessly about things only remotely connected to the film and
breaking out into preaching every now & again, with a few good oneliners
thrown in ("Pornography - an ugly word for a dirty business !"),
a bunch of wooden actors that lack proper directorial guidance, a scene
lifted from another (unfinished) film (Ed Wood's Rock and Roll Hell),
a bit of sleaze (there are even a few moments of topless nudity in this
one) and a cop dressed in drag - yup, you are in an Ed Wood film, in fact
the only one he directed in the 1960's, and one of his more obscure titles
(thanks to the lack of real stars). But even if all of the above
sounds appealing, don't expect too much from this one, for some reason
it's one of Wood's least entertaining pictures, maybe because it's too
straightforward and leaves to little room for Wood's predilection for
crossdressing and pulp clichés alike.
