A run-down tourist-boat commandeered by run-down captain John Carradine
is rammed by a shipwreck from worldwar II one night, forcing crew &
passengers to find a refuge in the ruins of the next island. There they
meet up with Nazi-scientist Peter Cushing who urges them to leave, for
not only did the shipwreck force them to enter the island, it also
brought to it a horde of Nazi zombies (created by cushing as the
ultimate weapon or the Toten-korps). Soon our little group of
passengers & boatsmen starts dying one by one (with Carradine being
the first), & their attempt to leave the island leads nowhere when
they lose their rowing boat &, on the island, do everything to get
seperated from one another (don't ask why !). Of course everyone ends up
dead - including Cushing -, except for Brook Adams, who manages to
escape in another rowing-boat.
Moody 70's horror trash about Nazi zombies - who look nice in their
uniforms with sunglasses -, that doesn't really live up to its promises,
but then, films about Nazi-zombies rarely do - Nazi-zombies is
probably just too good a concept to be treated accordingly. This one is
rather devoid of characterizations of our central characters, while the
supporting characters are little more than pale caricatures, & it is
full of gaping plotholes. The locations look great though (& are
filmed accordingly), lending a creepy atmosphere to the proceedings
without resorting to the usual clichés. &, when Brooke Adams &
Luke Halpin hide from the Nazis in an oven, that's at least worth
a chuckle or two.
