Michael (Mike Pinkney) is pretty much the born yet loveable loser: He
has come to Hollywood with big dreams of working in the film industry, but
only has amounted to make some experimental flicks on video that nobody
really cares about, and thus he works as a dog groomer, but he's not too
good at it and it's a dead end job anyway. On top of that his place is
infested by rats who seem to eat everything he needs, from bananas to
detergent, but the only thing his landlord does is suggesting getting a
cat, and his car is constanly breaking down for all sorts of reasons. And
then, totally out of the blue, he scores a date with ravishing Cora (Sonja
Kinski), a woman totally out of his league who nevertheless has a soft
spot for him. So he indeed gets a cat to take care of his rodent problem,
and then takes Cora out on what proves to be an adventurous and chaotic
experience that nevertheless ends with her coming to his place - but ... She's
Allergic to Cats sure is an unusual movie as despite its very
formulaic premise it approaches its story in a totally experimental way
and spices up the basic romance with touches of horror and even the
surreal, and develops a cinematic language far away from what you'd expect
to see in a (however unlucky) love story. And the outcome of this is quite
fascinating, a bizarre yet likeable genre bender that will very probably
stick with you for quite a while after watching.
