Daryl (Chris Burns) and his best friend Bart (Juistin Bowen) have found
jobs over Halloween at the Scare Zone, a scarehouse only open for the
season. Now the job itself - chasing visitors around with an axe wearing a
mask - is a bit on the dull side, the Scare Zone's owner Oliver (Simon
Needham) might be a bit full of himself, and not all of Daryl's colleagues
are a total joy to be with - but there's also Claire (Arian Ash), the goth
girl who runs the gift shop, and even if she has an unapproachable facade,
she seems to have taken a liking to Daryl - and he to her as well. So
things are looking up ... or at least they would be if there wasn't a
serialkiller on the loose in the scarehouse, going first and foremost
after the employees of the Scare Zone, and he seems to have a soft spot
for Claire - a soft spot on the psychotic side of things of course ... Now
this isn't a movie that re-invents the wheel - but then again, it's my
guess that it hasn't set out to. Actually it's a slasher movie that
follows the slasher formula very closely - but doing so, it's much more
entertaining than one would expect it to be, as it's a very witty movie
without ever going full moronic or trying for outright parody, it's got
relatable characters one can actually care about, it does well on both the
suspense and the jump scare side of things, and its scarehouse backdrop
comes across as believable - probably owed to the fact that it's
writer/director Jon Binkowski's day-job to create attractions for theme
parks -, and it's woven into the story very well without ever feeling
forced. So if you're looking for cool genre entertainment, look no
further.
