Michelle (Jennifer Plotzke) is taking her sister Debbie (Shara Ashley
Zeiger) to a yoga retreat, the Red Lotus - even if Debbie's the
last person to be into yoga. Only it's not really a yoga retreat, it's an
abortion clinic ... and the year's 2020, Roe v. Wade has been overthrown,
"planned parenthood" is considered a crime now, and abortion
doctors work in secret nowadays. Now Michelle has been impregnated by her
boyfriend (Jared Prudoff-Smith) and wanted to tell him on the very day he
dumped her - and she doesn't feel she's up to raising a kid on her own.
But in times like these it's no longer up to you if you're having your kid
or not, and there are forces at work trying to make sure a woman does not
have control over her own body and life ... What could have
been a blunt "message movie" turns out to be quite a powerful
short that uses elements of dystopian science fiction and conspiracy
thriller to tell its well-crafted story that avoids just giving simple
answers, and that's carried by a very subtle directorial effort and strong
performances by all involved. Well worth a look, and not su much for its
message but because it's just a good movie! And if this has
gotten you at all interested and you happen to live in NYC, The Red
Lotus premieres on May 31st 2018, 7 pm, at the Anthology Film
Archives, 32 2nd Avenue, New York, NY 10003.
