PEI Kids is a New Jersey based organisation "decicated to
promoting a safe enviroment for all children." And even if that
organisation is rather naturally focusing on at-risk kids in New Jersey
and the film on the operations of the group in Trenton, NJ, the message is
rather universal: Children given chances are of course less at risk than
others, but one also has to actually communicate with these kids, meet
their interests and speak their language to transmit these chances ... Now
stylistically, Pei Kids: Generation Change is a documentary of the
talking heads variety - but that works perfectly for transmitting the
message of the film, as these talking heads are not any
"specialists" (except from PEI's counselor Rob Fiorello) but the
very kids this documentary is about, sharing their views about their
personal superheroes, what they would change in town, and who they'd
invite for inspiration - and while their answers are rather diverse and
sometimes quite on the un-realistic side, they all show hope and
willingness for improvement rather than being just lofty ideas from people
out of touch with the problem.
In all, a pretty inspiring movie about a pretty downbeat topic, actually.
