It really starts as nothing bad, Marla (Lisa van Dam-Bates) has an IUD
implanted by Dr Lourdes (Jason Stange), who just happens to be a friend of
the family, which is why he does it for virtually free - and to celebrate
that, she and her boyfriend Jake (Travis Johnny Ware) have sex that night
... but during the act, Jake starts spitting blood, then he's pretty much
torn apart by forces unknown. The police can't make heads or tails of this
one, so they treat it like a murder case, but more because the cause of
death is completely alien to them than that they have any concrete
suspicions - and frankly, they're getting more on Marla's nerves than they
are helping. And after they're asking Marla about an ex-girlfriend of Dr
Lourdes that might have something to do with all of this, she starts to
have a hunch that the IUD has something to do with Jake's death - but when
she asks Dr Lourdes to take it out again, he just calms her with empty
words. Then one night, a bum (Samuel Mikolon) tries to rape her - but is
blown to pieces during the act. Of course, that worries Marla even more -
and that's when her roommate Jules (Katie Hemming) proves to be a true
friend and suggests a plan of action - but a plan that doesn't come
without dangers of its own ... At its core, Marla is a really
cool piece of body horror, but not one that gives everything away from the
get-go but one that builds things up by a clever build-up and atmospheric
filmmaking, this way leaving the audience at the edge of their seats for
the longest time to ever now and again strike with a vengeance - and these
scenes are really as bloody as they are grotesque and will satisfy every
gorehound. And of course a strong ensemble cast doesn't hurt one bit
either. Definitely worth a look.
