<body> <div align="left"> <table border="0" cellspacing="0" width="800" cellpadding="0" height="100%"> <tr> <td width="100" rowspan="3" background="../stylepix/square.gif" valign="top">  </td> <td width="4" rowspan="3"></td> <td width="592" valign="top">  </td> <td width="4" rowspan="3"></td> <td width="100" rowspan="3" background="../stylepix/squareright.gif" valign="top">  </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="592" valign="top">    <p>US TV producer Jay (Juliane Block) has this really really great idea for a reality show: To fly a washed up US TV star (though mainly commercials), Chad (Jeremy Fenton) to Malaysia, to have six native girls vie for his attentions, for one of them to ultimately get a green card and go to the US with him, and for all of them to "get famous" - because there's no pay for this - so ok, the concept basically IS <b><i>The Bachelor</i></b>, but at least the locale's good ... and since Jay is of Malayan descent, she figures that might cut through a lot of red tape. Well, she thought wrong, because the Malayan minister for cultural affairs (Teik Leong Lim) imposes a ton of restrictions on the production, mainly on moral grounds - and he imposes a censor on the production, none other than Jay's Asian sister Joythi (Nina Sharil Khan), who has fallen out with Jay years ago, and now takes her job especially serious and sees to it that everything's done according to the book (and it's a thick book), making it impossible for Jay to get the slightly racy stuff she wanted. Add to that a director (Alfred Loh) who actually sees himself as an arthouse filmmaker, contestants with bad tempers, locations falling through one after the other, Chad taking to drinking after having been sober for over a year, and you get the idea what's not going right. But things really go to hell when the minister makes a set visit and finds his own daughter (Sofia Goh), a wannabe actress, making out with Chad ...<p> <p>You could say <b>Kinks</b> is about a clash of cultures between East and West, or maybe about sibling rivalry, or even just about the hunger of an artist to create ... and you would be right everytime - but mainly the movie takes all those elements and masterfully weaves it into a satire of reality TV as we know it, all the while staying surprisingly clear of cheap jokes (but ok, there are some that were inevitable) and just becoming moronic or too obvious, instead relying on a well-structured and strong story and fleshed out yet fun characters.
