At a sleepover with her friends Ruby (Sarah Kopkin), Claire (Nadine
Forbes) and Isabella (Jordan Ashley), 16 year old nerdy Brianna (Hannah
Cohen-Lawlor) is scared beyond what's funny in a prank - and while Claire
and Isabella make fun of her, Ruby sticks by her. Thing is, after that
sleepover, Claire really starts bullying Brianna, so much so that after a
time she doesn't even want to see Ruby anymore. Instead she tries out a
ritual that according to an urban legend is to summon a demon to kill her
biggest enemy. And the next day, three hoodlums, Amelia (Leah Hudspeth),
Marco (Alex Zuko) and Skullgirl (Rachel Marshall) break into Claire's
house, kill all her family and kidnap her. Now Ruby is quick to think
Brianna might have had something to do with it and confronts her, but
Brianna denies all involvement, but in a way that leads to an argument.
Not long after that, Amelia runs across Ruby's lesbian sister Jade (Alicia
M. Clark), seduces and then kill her, then she and Marco also kill Ruby's
dad (G. Larry Butler) and kidnap her. Of course, all of this could be
attrigubed to coincidence - only it isn't as Amelia, Marco and Skullgirl
are all part of a cult led by Brother Thaddeus (Daniel Emery Taylor) that
has been called into action by Brianna's summoning and that has the
mission to bring a demon back to this world - and to achieve this, the
cult still needs the centerpiece, their sacrificial lamb: Brianna ... Basically,
It's Just a Game is a fun genre flick, one that combines elements
from slasher, home invasion and Satanic cult movies that has all the
shocks, the suspense, the violence, and even the humourous bits in all the
right places and concentrates on a handful of relatable characters to keep
the viewer engaged throughout. Now sure, this film is not the reinvention
of the genre itself, but all the same it's entertaining throughout and
should sit well with the casual horror fan.
