Rural Canada, the middle of winter: Siblings Laura (Jacqueline Godbout)
and Tim (Aaron Heels) have invited their friends Amy (Paige Foskett) and
Manny (Kenneth Bemister) on a trip to their parents' house for a bit of
partying, while at the same time, coworkers Mitch (Liam Seamus Murphy),
Sam (Thomas John Scott) and Sean (Steve Kasan) are on their way to a team
building exercise - and both trips seem to be doomed before arrival,
because in their respective cars, Tim and Sam prove to be dicks. But then
only a couple of miles apart, both cars break down at pretty much the same
time, and it's detected at both cars that the fuel lines have been cut.
Then both parties are attacked by a monster that seems to be not from this
earth or plane of existence or whatever. But fortunately, there's Kurdt
Waidmann (Elvis Stojko) and his team (Damien Doepping, Robert Notman) who
know exactly what they're dealing with here - some ancient demon - and how
to fight it. The problem is, Waidmann, a priest fallen from grace, has an
agenda of his own, and that agenda isn't exactly benign ...
Everything starts out like the typical monster slasher, with
some almost stereotypical characters and an easily identifiable final
girl. But this is a movie that, while delivering on the shock and violence
front, really plays with genre expectations and surprises time and again
with unusual twists and turns, throwing genre afficionados off the scent
ever so often. And in combination with a genre savvy direction and a solid
cast, this has then turned out to be a very entertaining watch.
