Marie (Christina Moses) and Ted (Chadwick Hopson) are set up for a
blind date - and it couldn't go worse, in fact so bad that Marie leaves
within 5 minutes ... but then feels sorry for Ted and offers to at least
drive him home. On their way they're stopped by bad cop Ron (Jonathan
Kehoe), and when he almost rapes Marie, Ted interferes, and by pure bad
luck, they shoot him dead. Seeing chances are slim that anybody will
believe them it was self defense, they decide to not call the police but
throw the body into a nearby lake ... but then they receive a call (on
Ron's phone) from a drug cartell who threaten to kill Ron's family
shouldn't he hand them over "the drugs" - and they feel they
can't have his family killed due to their misfortune, and actually don't
give a fuck who gets what drugs, so decide to do the handover in Ron's
place - but for that they need Marie's crazy DJ ex Eddie (Brian Flaccus)
for expertise. Now the handover goes terribly awkward when it turns out
that the drug cartel is actually Ted's dad (David Weiss), brother (Alex
Davidson) and cousin (Daniel Stahl), who have all had sex with Ted's ex
(Gillian Green) behind his back it turns out, and instead of making a
clean handover, Ted shoots his dad in the leg in a rage, and suddenly he
and Marie find themselves on the run from his folks. And things get really
complicated when they run into the FBI, who have their own agenda, and for
that they need Ted and Marie being in the line of fire ...
Despite a poignant voice-over from none other than Ice T, the
first few minutes of How We Met feel like a routine and quite
random romantic comedy - not bad but nothing special - until the movie
switches gears and steers towards quirky crime comedy, and really comes
into its own as that, thanks to a well-structured sceenplay that allows
for many an off-beat scene without ever losing itself in its craziness, a
colourful and eccentric ensemble of characters portrayed by a very capable
cast, and a directorial effort subtle enough to make this more than a
parade of cheap jokes. Great fun for sure!
