Finn (Gavin O'Fearraigh) and Branna (Erin Gavin), tourists from
Ireland, arrive at their perfect holiday home in South California, a nice
villa with pool they've got all to themselves ... until Tony (Steven
Martini) and Gia (Gabriela Kulaif) arrive as well, apparently the place
has been double-booked. They try to sort things out but can reach neither
the owner of the villa nor the travel agency - but since the place has two
roomy bedrooms anyways, the couples decide to both stay at the villa, Finn
and Branna because they actually enjoy the other couple's company, and
Tony and Gia because ... they're actually not Tony and Gia at all, not
even a couple and much less married as they claim, she has actually
embezzled some money and now has to lay low for a few days, and he has
been hired to get her out of the country, something that proves to be more
difficult than expected as the yacht he wants to put her on is still out
at sea. Soon though, weird things start to happen, like a guy in a druid
outfit popping up outside the house but always making the perfect
disappearing act when someone tries to catch him. Then Finn and Branna's
room is thrashed. And there is also wailing outside the house at night,
something only Tony can hear. Needless to say, after a few days
everybody's freaked out a bit. And Tony and Gia are more than a bit happy
when they finally receive news that their yacht has come in. And it's then
that they learn the threat of the druids outside is terribly real ... Definitely
more of a slowburn horror movie - but not so that one would mind, as the
film sets up its story and its characters quite beautifully, gives the
characters actual, distinctive profiles as well as good arcs, and makes
all of them very relatable. Plus the story of the two couples trying to
get along in itself is already pretty entertaining. The creepy scenes are
also well-handled though, and when terror strikes it strikes hard - only
to end in a totally unexpected but all the more amusing post-finale scene.
And all of this, along with a pretty solid cast, makes this really cool
genre entertainment.
