In a stakeout going horribly wrong, detective Ryan Calhoun (Matthew
Tompkins) loses his best friend and partner Jack (Damon Carney) and has to
shoot his other partner Roy (James Cable) in self defense, after he had
witnessed Roy eating Jack's flesh. Ryan's superior Logan (Michael
Ironside) suspends him after that, at least until the case is cleared, but
then Ryan makes some investigations of his own - and learns that Roy has
only recently been released from a mental hospital, run by Dr Whitney
(Arnold Vosloo), whom Ryan suspects of some wrongdoings that made Roy go
crazy almost immediately. And thus he persuades Logan to have him
committed to Whitney's institution for an undercover operation. He soon
finds out a few quite disturbing things, like the good doctors
predilection for demons, and the inexplicable fact that deeply disturbed
killers were discharged to commit more atrocities, but he also thinks he's
experimented on, and these experiments mess with his perception. This goes
so far that his whole reality begins to crumble, and reaches its peak when
he finds a fellow patient (Hayden Tweedie) he's been friendly with
dead in his bed, obviously murdered. Ryan now realizes he has to escape,
and he has only himself to trust - and things go downhill from there ... The
Harrowing is an immensely fascinating thriller, as it starts out as
your typical (if well made) genre movie, then gets creepier at any turn,
and once one thinks one has figured everything out, it twists the story
around completely. Of course, this is due to a cleverly written script,
but also helped by a very atmospheric and dynamic directorial effort, and
a uniformly first rate cast who give this movie their all. In all, very
well worth a look!
