Gary (Richard Nolan) receives a call from his wife Emelia (Astrida
Auza), but it soon becomes very clear that she never intended to actually
call him but accidently butt-dialed his number, and he's listening in on a
private conversation between her and a friend (Jane Pokou). Of course, he
immediately wants to hang up, but then curiosity gets the better of him
and he continues to listen - and learns more and more things he doesn't
want to hear, like that Emelia has long been disgusted by him, about her
infidelity, how she only uses their daughter to keep him at arm's length
and the like. And it's only then that things take a turn for the dark side
... Hang Up! is based on quite an interesting concept,
as all we see is the reactions of its lead to an off-screen conversation
(mostly monologue, actually), and these two elements put together actually
create a full story. And the concept is executed rather beautifully,
thanks of course to strong performances by all involved but also thanks to
great writing and a directorial effort that really understands to make the
most out of limited locations and actual on-screen action, which is merged
with the sound rather perfectly, creating quite some atmosphere along the
way. Definitely worth a look!
