Owing a fortune to crime kingpin Coyote (Luis Javier), Armando (Edwin
Perez) pretty much sees himself forced to cross the Mexican border to the
US to earn some decent money there, even if that means leaving his family
behind. However, he almost dies from thirst trying to make his way on foot
- and eventually wakes up in a wrestling ring, witch a makeshift Lucha
Libre mask sewn to his neck, having to face ultra-violent wrestler El
Gigante (David Forts) to the enjoyment of a sadistic backwoods family ... In
many ways, El Gigante is a very primal movie, its plot is skeletal,
the characters are sketchy at best, there's only very little dialogue, and
the film sure enough rates high when it comes to violence and the
grotesque - and that all works for the film, in a way it's a horror
showcase, that sure enough won't work for everyone, and sure isn't
recommended for those of a weak stomach, but it's very well put together,
has a rich visual language to it, is paced to really pack a punch, and
really gets one engaged to full effect.
