Deep in the woods, the Frankensteinian
monster Frank and the ancient vampire Zed have lived in a castle for years
in a co-dependent relationship: While Frank hunts for squirrels to feed
their blood to Zed, Zed sees to it that Frank's properly wired in every
night to receive his bolt of energy from lightning. And their peaceful
lives could go on forever if it wasn't for the over-ambitious politicians
and clergy of a nearby village who decide it's time to lead the peasants
they intend to use as cannonfodder for an "orgy of blood". Thing
is, Frank and Zed are very well-equipped to defend themselves, even when
outnumbered, and the orgy of blood thus turns into really just that ... Now
this is not the first puppet gore movie, but most certainly one of the
funniest, and much of the fun is derived from the cartoonish violence,
paired with (self-)irony and genre parody, and it's all done using
puppets. Now truth to be told, the movie falls a little short on character
development, with most of the puppets really already carrying their traits
on the outside, but then they are very beautifully designed, and the film
really succeeds in its worldbuilding, using some wonderful and greatly
detailed sets in a sort of comicbook gothic style, and as simplified as
the story might be, it makes sense, and in a funny way. And then there are
the many gore scenes that are well-executed using mostly practical
effects, and they're inventive enough to cause many a chuckle (if puppet
gore is your kind of thing). So in all, this is a welcomely macabre,
hilarious experience.
